This is a living extension of Margot, the much-loved East Sussex homewares and lifestyle shop. A bijou one-bedroom hideaway, stepping through the pale-pink door feels like stepping into a daydream: restored panelling, linen-draped windows, hand-thrown ceramics and vintage lighting all layered with a soft, earthy palette. Every detail has been chosen with an editor’s eye, balancing heritage and modernity — the worn patina of old walls meeting bespoke shelving and a fabric-skirted kitchen island (changed with the seasons). Think candlelit evenings and gentle, lived-in luxury.

It’s a space that invites slowing down, whether lingering over breakfast at the marble table, or curling up with a book in a chair you’ll wish you could take home. And you can — every piece from the pretty milk jugs to the gingham tablecloths and hand soaps links back to the shop, making the cottage a beautiful, tactile microcosm of Margot’s philosophy. Perfect for design lovers, this is a truly inspiring base for Lewes, Glyndebourne and the South Downs.

Owners-of-Margot-Cottage

Margot Homewares is the family-run venture of Kristian and Amanda Dean, born from their shared love of craft, food, and design. Kristian, a restorer of historic French homes, and Amanda, a food writer who co-founded the non-profit Cook School in 2019, brought their passions together in this project. Opened in an 18thC Grade II-listed building in Lewes, Margot reflects their love of timeless design — from European-inspired tiles to tactile tableware and linens. More than a shop, it’s an extension of their story, rooted in community, craft, and creating spaces that feel as nourishing as they are beautiful, with Margot Cottage as its continuation.

My Kip favourites

They love
A visit to the local gallery, a light lunch at a local favourite, followed by a wander around the town.

We love
The linen curtains that billow sunlight through restored sash windows.

You may not love
Small, but so perfectly formed. The bed is a double, not kingsize.

  • For drinks and/or dinner Amanda recommends No34 (a low-intervention wine bar serving simple seasonal dishes), The Pelham Arms (great Sunday roasts) and The Lewes Arms (traditional folk music).
  • Some of the best opera in the world happens at Glyndebourne, a 10-minute drive away.

  • Middle Farm is a wonderful farm shop and plant nursery full of unusual flowers.
