“We bought Whitehall Farm in 2012, from someone quite famous — they’d been using it as a place to escape to for years. We began running it as a smallholding, and in the early years we’d sit in the evenings with a glass of wine on the veranda of the large barn wondering what we should do with it, whilst looking out and marvelling across the view to the mountains of North Wales. After lots of sketches we decided to convert it into a holiday cottage, and call it Whitehall Dairy as this was once where cows were milked. Throughout the renovation we tried to keep as much of the original structure as possible, keeping the old beams and beautiful timber frames – if it looks old, then that’s how it was when we found it!” Owners Alex and Jackie
They love
“The fact that we get so many multi-generational groups visiting us, to celebrate a big birthday or event. Many amazing memories have been made here.”
We love
The stairs and dining table, hewn from a 378-year-old beech tree that died in one of the farm’s fields. You can see the dark lines of the fungus that killed it running through the wood, and it’s such a beautiful example of repurposing and craftmanship.
You may not love
Occasional farm traffic on the lane.

Surrounds.
- Stride straight out onto Offa’s Dyke or the Kerry Ridgeway, where the hills roll on forever. Or stroll the little-known Daisy Bank loop, where fields and lanes are laced with spring daffodils and summer orchids.
- Climb Roundton Hill or Corndon, the latter an extinct volcano — ideal for anyone who likes their hikes with a dash of geological drama!
- Montgomery is 2.5 miles away, a tiny town with outsized charm. Head to The Dragon for fish and chips, then have a rummage through gloriously bonkers Bunners, which sells everything from flower seeds to quad bikes. The Checkers is superb if you’re after fine dining (book ahead).
- There’s great bird watching from the hides by the River Severn (tufted ducks, great crested grebes, bittern).
- Stock up on Welsh gin, rich cheeses and great coffee in Newtown, where the High Street Delicatessen is dangerously persuasive.
- Kids will love exploring the medieval Powis Castle and a day aboard the Welshpool Steam railway.
- Head to the coast at Ynyslas or Aberdyfi, where the beaches are long and the crowds are few.
