“I wanted to create a collection of beautifully made, low-impact places to pause – small spaces designed with the same care you’d give a home, but shaped entirely by nature. Each would have its own private sauna and cold-plunge experience built in, turning even a short stay into a retreat. We designed everything from scratch, from the soft interiors to the quiet, efficient off-grid systems. The idea was simple: no gimmicks, just a serene retreat where great design, privacy and the landscapes do the talking.” Owner, Tally
She loves
“I chose this spot for the way the landscape feels almost otherworldly: a still fishing lake in front of you, the Oare Marshes stretching out beyond, and huge skies full of migrating birds. It’s a place where the cabin becomes part of the quiet – mornings with mist on the water and nature unfolding right outside the door.”
We love
The tiny spa feel. There’s a hot tub, cold dip, sauna, yoga kit, robes & fancy toiletries, with the added benefits of utter privacy, and the soundtrack of nature being real rather than piped muzak.
You may not love
Truly off-grid for electricity; no plug sockets just USBs. You need to be able to light and maintain the woodburner. No TV or microwave.
Sustainability.
The cabin is part of The Red Cabin collection – a series of design-led spaces owned and managed by The Red Cabin team in collaboration with hosts. Sustainability is woven into every stage of the cabins’ life cycles. They are manufactured in-house and the builds are BRE-audited from cradle to grave, ensuring environmental responsibility from material sourcing to end-of-life. Built with airtight construction and an impressive EPC rating of B, each cabin offers exceptional energy efficiency and thermal comfort year-round. British materials and recycled content are prioritised wherever possible – everything from insulation to upholstery. This thoughtful approach reduces a carbon footprint while creating beautiful, durable spaces that respect both nature and the communities around them.
Surrounds.
- Start the day with a hot tub, bubbling in the morning sunshine, what could be nicer? Or go for the cold plunge then sprint to your sauna to hastily heat up again.
- Bring fishing gear for a spot of coarse fishing.
- Grab the art supplies and sit out on deck to sketch the view. Roll out the yoga mat too, and have a gentle stretch in the sunshine.
- Wander the coastal paths with your binoculars: the Oare marshes are alive with over 250 bird species. Look out for winter waders and duck (teal godwits & spoonbill); summer breeders (avocet, little ringed plover, lapwing), and year-round residents including grey heron, kingfishers and little egrets.
- Walk over to Faversham (the oldest market town in Kent, recorded in the Domesday Book!) for medieval streets, half-timbered buildings, a brilliant antiques market and a slap-up Italian lunch in Posillipo.
- Visit Shepherd Neame Brewery for a shot of local history (Britain’s oldest brewery) and pints of local ale.
- Stock up on groceries at Macknade Food Hall, or head to Hollow Shore Fishmongers for fresh-from-the-ocean oysters and seafood.
- Wander home at sunset and end the day by your fire pit, watching the stars slowly punctuate the sky. It’s utterly silent here, with no light pollution; very special.
