Hen House & Studio

On the western edge of Skye, in the crofting township of Fiscavaig near Carbost, the land unfurls towards Loch Bracadale and the light is luminous. This is a place of vast views and ever-shifting weather, where sea, sky and grassland blur into one hypnotic panorama. Set lightly upon the ancient landscape are 2 separate hideaways for 2, sitting on the same croft: the Hen House and the Studio. The Hen House has won awards for its architecture; indeed, its design is in the V&A Dundee. Timber-clad, light-filled and deceptively spacious, it’s a masterclass in calm, with a dramatic glazed wall framing the loch, a wood-burning stove for wild days, and a mezzanine reading room that keeps everything feeling open and connected. Nearby, the Studio echoes the same design principles on a smaller, cosier scale – a contemporary, beautifully pared-back space with a lofty living area and a more cocooning bedroom. Both are deeply comfortable, and designed to immerse you in the elements rather than shut them out.

This is Skye for romantics: a place to settle and slow for a few days rather than merely dip in. Think deep, restorative sleeps; coffee drunk slowly while watching weather roll over The MacLeod’s Tables and islands; evenings by the fire after long walks from the door through woods, down to beaches, or off towards the Cuillin. Wildlife passes – deer at dusk, eagles overhead – and there are cafés, distilleries and ferry trips nearby. But take it from us: you’ll mostly want to stay put.
