Will grew up on this 25-acre farm in the East Sussex countryside; childhood friend Harry has been part of it just as long. Now as architects they’re slowly shaping it into something brilliant – and changing the playing field for cabins everywhere. Amongst an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, their unique creations perch across hills, amongst woodland and beside a spring-fed pond. Each draws inspiration from the region’s black agricultural buildings and old barn forms, reworked into something more refined and astonishingly original.

The first pair – Cabin X and Hill Cabin – are rustic-chic in all the right ways: picture windows, vintage finds and long Sussex views. But the 2 new cabins are something else entirely. In a market crowded with lookalike units, Bather’s and Yogi’s feel shockingly fresh: bold, immersive and built around proper characters and moods. The former is devoted entirely to the art of bathing, with a sauna, cold plunge, hot tub, soaking bath and outdoor shower tucked onto a secret terrace beneath oak trees; the latter is centred on movement and stillness, with its own yoga studio, swimming lake, hot tub and deck for stretching, swimming and mindful relaxation. Talk about upping the ante. They’re clever, atmospheric and just plain exciting – the kind of places you’ll book as much for the idea as the stay itself. Kip catnip.

“Cabin X began as a simple music room on my parents’ farm, later becoming a hangout and sleepover place for our friends, despite its basic setup. After qualifying as an architect, I returned to transform it with a bathroom and a more resolved design – an approach that next led to Hill Cabin, another reimagined structure on the farm. In 2020, together with fellow architect and my long-time friend Harry, I founded Architects Holiday: an independent collection of woodland cabins rooted in architecture, sustainability and wellbeing, designed for rest, simplicity and connection with nature.” Owners, Will & Harry

My Kip favourites

They love
“Bather’s: the giant bathroom and the hidden roof terrace featuring a woodland spa under the canopy of a giant oak tree. Yogi’s: the wild swimming pond and the wraparound engawa (covered walkway). Cabin X: the shower/bathroom with its dual-aspect windows. Hill Cabin: the view!”

We love
How utterly immersive each feels.  Your choice of which you stay in is about which experience and mood you want.

You may not love
Bather’s: the bed is a sleeping nook. Yogi’s: the swimming pond is spring fed so it’s very cold! Cabin X has a rural setting so you can get woken up if it’s rainy / windy. Hill Cabin is close to the farm and farmhouse so you may hear noise.
All stays require a £100 security deposit, held against a card.

  • “We booked Cabin X for two nights to celebrate a special occasion, and we were in awe the moment we saw the cabin nestled in the forest. It’s beautifully designed and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The interior décor created a warm, relaxed atmosphere, and the breakfast provisions were delicious. We also booked the sauna, which was a fun and unique experience—especially getting to light it ourselves. We’d happily recommend the cabin and overall experience to anyone who loves nature and is looking for some peaceful time away.”

  • View from Cabin 2
  • A beautiful old farm shop and cafe is just up the track, where you can preorder picnic and BBQ packs. We kept things simple and grabbed some local cheeses, dips, crackers and rose wine, then hurried back to the cabin for a sunset picnic to watch the colour slowly drain from the sky.
  • There’s a wood-fired sauna on-site; book a session and unwind in the lovely heat. You can also book massages, yoga classes and sound bath sessions.
  • Country strolls lead out from the front door. Walk to the atmospheric Battle Abbey through the 1066 battlefields.
  • There are some great pubs in the area. Recommended is The Cross Inn at Staplecross, a 16thC coaching inn with lovely pub grub.
  • Spend a day in Rye (cobbled streets, brilliant independents). Climb the tower for an amazing panorama of the area. or go to Hastings for a pretty old town and colourful fishing huts.
  • The coast is a 20-minute drive away, though Will recommends driving that bit further to Camber Sands, an enormous golden stretch with a neighbouring nature reserve.
