Space & setting.

Striking that dream balance between remote but accessible, close to the sea but away from the crowds, this beautifully simple cabin hides in stunning Devon countryside. More specifically, in its very own wildflower meadow, which you’ll have all to yourself. Allowing a total disconnect there’s no power, WiFi or phone reception, which allows a reconnect with each other and the surrounding nature. Just what we all need after lockdown. So gorgeous in its pared-back design, there’s Stiffkey-Blue panelling, little posies of wildflowers, and boho cushions on the benches out front, a perfect spot for reading in the sunshine. You’ll find all the comforts you need but nothing extraneous.

Sleep deeply in the super-comfy bed then wake to a breakfast hamper with eggs, bread and charcuterie made on the farm. You can spend your days strolling through corn fields and lolling on Jurassic Coast beaches, and head to fabulous local eateries for lunch (kicked off by Hugh F-W, this area is a real foodie hotspot). And later, as swallows swoop and the sun begins to set, settle into the swing seat under the ash tree with a bottle of English wine. Life’s simple pleasures are the most rewarding.

Getting here: you’ll need to drive.

“We moved to this area drawn by the sea, the beautiful setting, and because it’s a gastronomic hub. I am a chef and Alice works in the wine industry, so we wanted to be surrounded by food businesses by like-minded people doing the same thing. There are some great local producers down here. I built the cabin to create somewhere surrounded by nature, away from the noise of modern life and really private – definitely not an identikit ‘glamping pod’ in a field of other pods.” Owner, Hugo

My Kip favourites

He loves
“Sitting around the firepit listening to the utter silence and odd owl hoot, while local venison steaks sizzle on the grill.”

We love
The brilliant blend of wilding it as you’re off-grid and close to nature, but with the comfort of a good bed, bathrobes and a powerful hot shower.

You may not love
Closed Dec-Feb annually. The toilet is a composting one. No power or WiFi and patchy phone reception. Sorry, no children.

  • "I have discovered some magic little places thanks to Kip - a personal highlight being Ash Tree Cabin in Devon, where I spent a couple of sun-soaked days last August."

    Emily, August 2022
  • "It was even better than it looks in the photos, when we turned the corner and walked into the meadow, it was like a fairy tale! We had an amazing time and it was exactly what we were looking for - to get away and spend some quality time together in the peace and quiet of the wonderful Devon countryside. The cabin was perfect, so cosy and comfortable, with everything that you needed. We also thought the kitchen was perfectly stocked, and it was great to be able to cook at the firepit!"

  • "We had the most relaxing of weekends. The cabin is so lovely! The detail and finishing touches to make it feel cosy and homely, didn't go unnoticed. It really is a great spot and the perfect place to stay if you're looking for some time to reset and relax! Thanks so much."

    Nicci and Tom, June 2022

  • Just 5 miles from the Jurassic Coast, there’s no better location for Dorset and Devon’s best scenery. From your cabin, take a meandering walk to the sea via ancient hill forts – Lambert’s Castle and Coney’s Castle – which have spectacular views over the Marshwood Vale.
  • There are plenty of excellent local pubs, including The Bottle Inn, an easy wander up the road, and the Gyle59 brewery, which you can stroll to across the valley for a pint and to pick up some bottles to go with your BBQ.
  • The area around Lyme Regis – with its pastel Georgian houses and sweeping sands – is a gastronomic hub, influenced by River Cottage and Mark Hix. There are some amazing local producers, farm shops, markets and fishermen; Hugo will point you to the best ones.
  • Visit Furleigh Estate’s vineyard, just north of Bridport, for a guided taste of the Dorset grapes. Or, time your visit with the annual festival at Castlewood Vineyard.
  • Paddleboard across Lyme Regis Bay – you can hire a board or book a lesson.
