Space & setting.

This gorgeous wagon has already lived 2 previous lives: the first as a railway carriage, the second as a lambing shed. Now over 100 years old, it’s been reborn a 3rd time as something rather more beautiful. Encircled by wildflowers, it sits on the edge of a woodland with huge views over fields, part of a countryside farm and sister property to the Waterlily cabin; book both and come with friends (if you can decide who gets which hideaway). The interiors are simple, rustic-luxe at its best — a restored barrel ceiling, antique furniture and vintage signs married with a feather duvet, modern lamps and a chic kitchenette. Best of all, a curtained, wood-fired bath hidden in a woodland clearing behind — so romantic. Hire their e-bikes to zip along the cycle path into Cambridge for golden architecture and great shopping. Or just stay rural: walk along the pretty River Cam and around the Grantchester meadows, stopping for coffees, ice creams and pub lunches.

Getting here: drive, or train to Cambridge then taxi (5 miles).

“The railway wagon has always sat on our land; when the local railways closed, their wagons were sold to farms in the area for animal housing/storage. In the third lockdown we decided our sheep could live elsewhere! A local guy restored the shell and we fitted out the interior with a vintage vibe. Although a long way from the West Country, GWR had to feature as my grandfather proudly worked for them all his life in Covent Garden.” Owner Jo

My Kip favourites

She loves
“Soaking in the outdoor bath at sunset, watching the stars come out.”

We love
The retro deckchairs under the apple trees and beside the swimming pond; such peaceful spots to soak up the sun and let your mind idle.

You may not love
Swimming hours in the pond are restricted (2-4pm daily) as it ‘belongs’ to the Waterlily cabin. Sorry, no dogs or children.

  • "Great stay, very cosy, and nothing was too much trouble - we had a few issues starting the outside bath which were all sorted very quickly! The cooked breakfast was delicious too."

  • "We absolutely loved our stay in the Bluebell Wagon. Jo and Tim are fantastic hosts with an incredible eye for detail from the decor down to the homemade toiletries. The wagon is cosy and has everything you could need. The kits to make pizzas and a fire pit dinner are full of delicious, locally sourced ingredients and are fun to make! The real star of the show is the bath! Taking a soak under the stars was an incredible experience. We stayed in for ours! We really can’t fault our stay and will definitely be back again soon!"

Sustainability.

“We have solar panels, an EV charging point, and the food we serve is locally sourced where possible. We carried out much of the building work and all of the decorating, sewing and repurposing of furniture ourselves. I try hard not to buy anything new (aside from top-quality mattresses, bedding and towels), and to keep our waste and energy consumption as low as possible.”

  • Zip into Cambridge (5 miles along a cycle path from the village) for a mooch around the museums, galleries and independent shops, then have a delicious lunch on Benet St. Or punt down the Cam and soak up the sights from the water.
  • Stroll through the Grantchester meadows, a pretty 5-mile circular walk from the village centre. There are plenty of spots for a wild swim en route.
  • Sink into a deckchair under the apple trees at Orchard Tea Garden – this Cambridge institution has been serving up cream teas here for over a century.
  • Duxford Imperial War Museum is a short drive away, its enormous hangars filled with incredible aircraft. Climbing aboard a WW2 Lancaster is an unforgettable experience.
  • The area is full of historic homes and estates. Wimpole Hall has 600 acres of beautiful parkland and a rare breed farm. Jacobean-style Anglesey Abbey is particularly lovely in winter, when snowdrops fill its gardens.
