Hidden deep in an ancient bluebell wood, this cabin is extraordinary. Bar the soft furnishings, every inch has been handcrafted by designer and maker Jeremy, reflecting his deep love of beautiful materials and traditional craftsmanship. The timber shell is highly sustainable and thermally efficient, staying comfortable year-round thanks to an air-source heat pump and solar panels. Random-width English oak boards line the floor, aromatic cedar and larch clad the ceilings, while the furniture is crafted from wide single boards of English oak and elm. Even the smallest details – door handles, light fittings, the log box and toilet roll holder – have been made especially for the cabin. It’s the most dazzling display of craftmanship.

Wide panoramic windows frame the woodland, so you’re constantly aware of being cradled amongst the trees, and staying put is half the magic. Deer wander past, birdsong fills the air and woodpeckers drum in the distance. Spring brings bluebells and wood anemones, summer keeps everything deliciously cool beneath the canopy, autumn offers copper leaves and chestnut foraging, while winter, if you’re lucky, dusts the woods with snow. Star-filled skies are a constant. If you do venture out, Sussex’s loveliest landscapes are close by. Walk the ancient paths of the High Weald, explore the Pevensey Levels, the chalky South Downs or the ever-changing coast before returning to live the cabin in the woods dream.

Getting here: drive, or train to Robertsbridge direct from Charing Cross then taxi (15 mins)

“The combination of a tumbledown cottage and an old grass tennis court hidden within our secluded woodland gave us the opportunity to create something we’d long imagined. The cabin grew out of my work designing houses, cabins and furniture for creative clients, and has become the culmination of everything I’ve learnt; a true labour of love. Everything I make is shaped by a deep respect for carefully sourced materials and traditional making skills, and that philosophy runs through every inch of the cabin. We live nearby, but it sits quietly in its own woodland clearing, surrounded by this truly special, timeless landscape.” Owners, Jeremy and Fiona

“The utter tranquility of the secluded, unspoilt setting, and the calmness instilled by the gentle movement of shadows cast onto the walls and floors by sunlight shining through the trees. The Japanese call this ‘Komorebi’.”

We love
“The beautiful, oak-clad bathtub. Bring a good book for a long soak.”
