Cockermouth is one of the Lake District’s best-kept secrets: a handsome market town where independent bakeries, proper pubs and bookshops still outnumber souvenir shops. You’re perfectly placed for mornings around Buttermere and Crummock Water, afternoons on the Whinlatter trails, and heart-pumping activities at Honister Slate Mine, followed by evening wanders through lively streets that feel nicely local. It’s basically the sweet spot between mountains and coast, with all the adventure of the Lakes and none of the bustle.

Hidden inside the former Masonic Hall, this is a calm, characterful retreat in the heart of town. Original proportions blend with modern interiors – beautifully panelled walls, timber floors, a sage-green kitchen and a cosy sitting room for relaxing after a day on the fells. The standout, though, is the bathroom, where a sculptural stone resin tub and handmade encaustic tiles promises deliciously long soaks. Step outside and Cockermouth is on your doorstep: have a couple of drinks at the The Bitter End and plan the next day’s adventures, then wander home – easy.

Getting here: train to Maryport then taxi (15 mins)

We’ve owned this building for a number of years and been renovating it slowly. We wanted to bring a loft apartment feel to Cockermouth – something light, airy and modern above the hustle and bustle of the town.Owners, John and Hannah

  • Start with Cockermouth itself, full of great indies and galleries. The owners recommend Number 15 for homewares, Shills Deli and Lyndseys butchers – plus The Bitter End for a proper Cumbrian lunch.
  • Twenty minutes away, Buttermere is one of the Lake District’s most-beautiful corners, with an easy lakeside walk and plenty of spots for a paddle if you’re feeling brave.
  • Wordsworth House (birthplace of Wordsworth) is less grand stately home, more glimpse into everyday Georgian life – complete with a walled garden and the pretty River Derwent running behind it.
  • Head underground at Honister Slate Mine. Whether you fancy a fascinating tour or something far more adrenaline-fuelled (Via Ferrata, Ghost Tours, the Infinity Bridge etc), it’s a dramatic day out tucked high in the fells.
  • Bring or hire bikes for Whinlatter Forest. England’s only true mountain forest has brilliant cycling trails and woodland walks.
  • You’re an hour’s drive from Windermere, star of the Lake District. Chug across the water on an old-fashioned paddle steamer or hire paddleboards or kayaks to explore at your own pace.
  • But we prefer Crummock Water (20 mins’ drive). Quieter than many of the Lakes, it’s a gorgeous place to wild swim and picnic; bring a book and spend a few hours here.
