The St Giles Estate feels like its own world. Ancient parkland surrounds the main house, red kites and sea eagles drift through the trees, and footpaths lead straight onto neighbouring Cranborne Chase – 380 square miles of chalk downs, ancient woodland and river valleys. It’s a place for long walks then equally long lunches in the area’s excellent gastro pubs. There are 4 places to stay across the estate. The 19thC Grooms’ Cottages sleep 4 apiece and are delightfully, playfully eccentric, mixing exposed brickwork, dark wood panelling and original fireplaces with bold colours, chandeliers and copper roll-top baths. Look closely and you’ll spot equestrian touches throughout, a nod to the buildings’ former lives. For couples, the East and West Pepperpot Lodges offer something cosier and more romantic: quirky circular gatehouses filled with antiques from the main house, along with woodburners and countryside views.

Whichever you choose, this is a wonderful escape for a couple of days, and a brilliant base for Dorset if you can stay longer. The Jurassic Coast and New Forest are both just 30 minutes away by car, some of southern England’s most beautiful landscapes. On Friday evenings, The Forestry bar brings the estate to life with local ales, rotating pop-up food vendors and often live music, too; the rest of the time it’s blissfully quiet here.

Exterior of The Riding House, Dorset

“The house and outbuildings fell into a period of disrepair following the Second World War until the 12th Earl and Countess of Shaftesbury took over in 2010. The buildings have now been through a 12-year, award-winning restoration, giving us the chance to welcome guests once again.” Manager, Olivia

  • "We had the most amazing weekend in our Pepper Pot Cottage. The style of the interior was beautifully done with lots of attention to detail. It was warm and cosy with fabulous luxurious bath robes and towels and lovely soft linen on the bed. The views were just perfect and the location just right for our romantic weekend. We will be back very soon, thanks for everything."
