The Old Piggery sits low in the Cornish countryside, a proper old barn with stories in its beams and a generous sense of space all around it. Fields roll out in every direction. No streetlights. No traffic hum. Just birds singing and, if you slip into the wooden tub after sunset, a sky thick with stars – startlingly bright. Inside, it’s all warmth and personality, owner Sophia’s eye for pattern and colour giving the place a gentle, lived-in charm that feels instantly easy. Mornings drift into afternoons, days just flow. Children can meet farm animals and roam in the garden (there’s a swing, and plenty of room for football), while you enjoy coffee outside, binoculars at the ready for passing woodpeckers and barn owns at dusk.

And then there’s the excellent location, between coast and culture. Porthleven is all harbour views and good pubs while St Ives delivers beaches and art, via a famously scenic train from St Erth. Closer still, Gwithian Beach stretches wide beneath Godrevy Lighthouse, with miles of golden sand and seals bobbing just offshore. Trevaskis Farm is a 10-minute detour en route; get picnic goodies on the way there and pick-your-own berries on the way home.

Getting here: drive, or train to St Erth then taxi (15 mins)

“We wanted to encapsulate the slower and simpler life we live here in Cornwall. Feeling nestled in the Cornish countryside whilst having access to the most breathtaking coastlines the UK has to offer. I’m a keen interiors enthusiast, and wanted to make the Old Piggery feel like a home from home; pressing pattern, colour and a whimsy approach into the walls of this old barn.” Owner, Sophia

My Kip favourites

She loves
“Dipping in the hot tub, which overlooks the surrounding farmland and rolling green hills. It’s amazing at night, too. With almost no light pollution, stargazing is incredible and you hear multiple owls hooting, who all nest nearby.”

We love
The sunshine-yellow kitchen and layering of patterns.

You may not love
Minimum 4 nights, and an additional cleaning fee (see FAQ). The garden is not fully secure. Very rural, you’ll need a car to reach pubs, shops, beaches etc (10 mins).

  • "“We had such a wonderful stay. The barn is truly something special, beautifully finished, spotless and so thoughtfully put together. You can tell a lot of care has gone into every detail. The surroundings are so peaceful. During the day, the garden is alive with wildlife and at night, the starry skies and the sound of the owl made it feel like a complete escape from everything. Didn’t really want to ever leave, we will absolutely be back!”

  • Just relax on your first day here. Kids can feed the chickens, watch the rare Babydoll sheep graze, and follow the farm’s ‘treasure trail’, as well as roaming free in the huge garden. Simple pleasures.
  • Zip to Gwithian Beach at low tide. Paddle in the mermaid pools and keep an eye on the sea – seals often bob just beyond the breakers near Godrevy Lighthouse. Stay for sunset; it’s particularly beautiful here.
  • Pop to Trevaskis Farm for a proper farm shop browse – fresh bakes, local produce, and pick-your-own strawberries or raspberries in season. Stay for cake if you know what’s good for you.
  • Spend an afternoon in historic Porthleven. There are plenty of good swim spots, then have a pint in the sun outside The Harbour Inn, or tuck into a cosy corner at the 17thC Ship Inn (there’s a great quiz every Wed night).
  • Do St Ives the easy way: park at St Erth and take the coastal train. It’s a short but epic journey, often called the most scenic train ride in Britain. Once here, explore brilliant art galleries, beautiful beaches, visit The Tate and eat at Cintra Seafood Bar; a perfect day.
  • Head to Marazion for long golden beaches and to walk the cobbled causeway out to St Michael’s Mount.
  • Tucked away just north of Sennen Cove, Gwynver is one of Cornwall’s best-kept secrets. Steeped in legend, this secluded beach is believed to be named after Guinevere, the wife of King Arthur, adding a mythical charm to its natural beauty.
