*Brand new*

Tucked away down a single-track road, surrounded by nature and serenaded by birdsong, is a rustic-luxe shepherd’s hut where in-the-know modish types come to unwind. It may be a hut but step through the French doors and the sheer style will blow you away: a muslin-draped bed, a rolltop copper bath… it’s all very special. Contemporary-design lovers will admire the carved-stone sink, steel-flume log burner and raw wood panelling, while thoughtful extras include bathrobes, cosy blankets, Norfolk Natural Living toiletries and stylish earthenware crockery. What’s more, the hideaway is made entirely from sustainable materials, inside and out.

The wider setting is a peaceful, rural farm: this is a place of ultimate relaxation, where you can fully disconnect from city stress and spend time walking, biking and relaxing. Easy day trips include the Tilton Cutting (beloved by David Attenborough), medieval castles and Rutland Water, or just trundle to pubs for lazy lunches. You’ll probably have worked this out for yourself, but the ultimate thing to do here is throw open the double doors, pop a bottle of fizz and climb into a bubble-filled tub — or fire up the hot tub for an alfresco soak. Lose hours simply gazing across the landscape, your only company the odd horse ambling across the farm in the distance.

Getting here: you’ll need to drive

The sister owners were brought up on the farm and have always dreamt of building a glamping business here. Aneka is a trained accountant, runs a Pumpkin Patch and lives on-site. Danielle is London based; a freelance accessories designer.

My Kip favourites

They love
“Lying in bed with a morning cup of tea, looking out over the fields; on a warm day it’s nice to open the top stable door to let fresh air roll in and hear birds sing.”

We love
The beautiful bathroom; it’s frankly incredible how they’ve fitted such luxe into a shepherd’s hut!

You may not love
You’ll need to drive here, though you can walk 2 miles to the pub. No WiFi. There are a couple of buildings/barns behind the hut but you face out to fields.

Sustainability.

The hut is made from sustainable materials — FSC wood cladding, sheep’s wool insulation, FSC-approved wood flooring — and the rustic internal detailing is made from reclaimed pallet wood from the farm. The toilet is an eco-compost loo; though a fancy self-stirring one!

Surrounds.

  • Walking path in the Leicestershire countryside
    Tilton Railway Cutting
  • Tilton Railway Cutting. Twenty minutes on foot will lead you into the nature reserve at Tilton, featured in David Attenborough’s A Life on Our Planet. As a young boy he would go fossil hunting here, and it is one of the places that inspired his love of the natural world.
  • Sauvey Castle. A 15-minute stroll takes you to a medieval castle ruin, originally built by King John as a secluded hunting lodge.
  • Launde Big Wood. The owners love Big Wood for longer walks; continue on past Launde Abbey to the The Rose & Crown in Tilton for a drink before the return leg.
  • Gates Nursery. So much more than a garden centre, nearby Gates is a farm shop, café, tea room and clutch of independent shops all rolled into one. Stop by the Fox and Hound for fantastic food afterwards.
  • Rutland Water: Covering 4,200 acres of open countryside, Rutland offers kayaking, SUP, windsurfing and sailing on its lake. You can hire bikes, too, and it’s a popular fly-fishing spot for brown trout.
  • Local market towns. Uppingham and Oakham are both in the vicinity and lovely for a mooch. Uppingham’s market is on Fridays, Oakham’s on Saturday.
  • The Grainstore Brewery and Tap. Sample award-winning local beers at this excellent brewery, which also hosts regular quiz nights, comedy and live music.
