There’s a particular kind of holiday that begins on a train. No keys, no traffic, no working out where to park – just a book, a window seat, and a coastline arriving outside the window.

The UK is full of seaside towns reachable by rail, and a surprising number of them are direct. From London, you can be in Whitstable for oysters in under 1h30, or in a sauna in Margate in 90 minutes. From Edinburgh, North Berwick is thirty-five minutes door to platform.

Then there’s the long-haul romance of the sleeper trains. The Night Riviera will deliver you to Penzance at sunrise, with the same line continuing to Carbis Bay and the coast running alongside the train for the final stretch. The Caledonian Sleeper from Euston has you waking up in Scotland with onward connections to the wild west coast.
