At the edge of a beech wood, with a wild meadow unfurling beyond the windows, this delightful 3-bedroom barn is bathed in birdsong and dappled light. Yet it’s only 3 miles from the historic colleges, galleries and café tables of Cambridge; ideal for those who want both countryside hush and city buzz. Owned by Simon and Sophie, it has been dressed with her interior designer’s eye but shaped by the family’s heart: this was once their home. Over 10 months, they slowly transformed it from a humble office annexe to this dreamy retreat, whilst raising 3 small boys and coaxing the surrounding land into bloom. And that sense of lived-in warmth is what makes it sing. This isn’t a house that’s been filled in one go, but one gathered over time. There are bespoke linen sofas from Caravane, tapestry-upholstered armchairs inherited from Sophie’s French grandparents, an oak dining table handmade by her godfather, a 19thC indigo wall hanging from Japan, and bamboo threaded throughout to tie it all together.

In spring and summer, the soundtrack is pure countryside theatre – swifts slicing through the sky, bees humming over the lavender; it feels slightly Provençal. As the seasons turn, the beech trees cast a copper glow, owls hoot and the strange cry of muntjac deer carries through the trees. Beyond the meadow, Cambridge offers just the right counterpoint year-round: culture, a little wandering, punting on the Cam, brilliant food. And if the day calls for less doing and more drifting, you can book a massage or simply read under the linden trees.

“Before we decided to share this small corner of magic, it was our home for 2 years. We nested our loud but lovely family into the meadow: 3 little boys, amid months of building, planting and foraging. It was a slow but mighty team effort, of which we’re very proud, and our time living there now makes for an extra personalised guest experience. We now live in the main house, and want to provide guests with both peaceful refuge and uplifting inspiration. The Lodge is a place to disconnect from the noise and distractions of everyday life. The Meadow is a space for quiet contemplation, creative calm and connecting with nature throughout the seasons. Cambridge, the city on our doorstep, offers all the cultural and historic enrichment you could ask for.” Owners, Sophie and Simon

My Kip favourites

They love
“The kitchen, with its cosy and compact charm. We’re very foodie so we made sure it’s fully equipped from fork to fridge and has brilliant Smeg appliances that enhance the entire experience so anyone staying can lean into cooking and feasting joys. When possible we love to share the beautiful bounty of produce that comes from our garden; raspberries, plums, apples and herbs galore.”

We love
The glorious bedroom wallpaper – Nina Campbell’s Ashdown in Chelwood Blue/Ivory – chosen for Sophie’s lifelong devotion to blue and the fabrics from the childhood bedroom she adored.

Only 1 bathroom and it’s downstairs. Rates don’t include the cleaning fee (see FAQ).

  • Wander to The Gog Farm Shop and Shacks Cafe for easy lunches and to pick up excellent fresh produce to cook with. They run sundowner evening events in spring and summer, with food trucks and a DJ.
  • Walk the Gog Magog Hills at golden hour. Wandlebury Country Park and the wider estate are just the ticket for a leg-stretch, all woodland trails, wildflower meadows and Highland cattle. Bring boots if it’s been raining.
  • You’re just 3 miles from Cambridge, which means you can be punting on the Cam, mooching around bookshops, galleries and college lanes, then back in the meadow for teatime.
  • Kettle’s Yard – a contemporary and modern gallery – is wildly inspiring, while the Fitzwilliam Museum is perfect for a slower afternoon among fascinating historic artefacts.
  • The University Botanic Garden is gorgeous in every season. Expect huge glasshouses, winding paths, a great cafe and 8,000 plant species from around the world. Kids go free.
  • Work through Simon and Sophie’s foodie recommendations. Try delicious fresh pasta at Chaters; seasonal produce cooked over flames at Provenance Kitchen (especially lovely in summer, with outdoor tables), and hearty home cooking and a great atmosphere at The Axe & Compasses. Or book ahead for Vanderlyle, with its brilliant tasting menu.
  • Book something indulgent and call it balance. Head to Paus for wood-fired hot tubs, saunas and rolling countryside views, or stay put and arrange a treatment in the meadow with Tiny House Retreats.
