Space & setting.

Hidden in a secluded glade on a former farm, this cabin is off-grid perfection. The minimalist, wood-clad space has just enough luxe for relaxation – a deep king-sized bed, a record player and vinyl and a hand-built Japanese Ofuro style hot-tub-for-two. But it’s really the wild Scottish Border surroundings that take centre stage. Sunlight streams into the space through picture windows, showcasing a wide open sky, and gorse- and heather-blanketed slopes that undulate all the way to the Pentland Hills. Bring walking boots and layers; you’ll spend hours exploring.

In spring, you’ll be surrounded by cherry and wild apple blossom; daffodils and wildflowers. In summer, the grass grows long and the bright yellow gorse scents everything with coconut. Autumn is an explosion of colour, thanks to red beeches and golden larches, and as winter draws in you’ll see incredible early morning mists and sparkling frost. Night skies are silent and starlit, and when it snows, it feels a bit like Narnia. But don’t let all this wild seclusion fool you, there’s plenty within easy reach if you can bear to leave – Edinburgh is just 30 mins’ drive away, while 3 miles away are West Linton’s cosy pubs, farm shops and restaurants.

Getting here: best to drive

Owner Lotte

“I grew up here, and my parents rewilded the 18 acres during our childhood, planting over 2,000 trees. During the pandemic I had a change in work circumstances, going from busy freelancing in the arts to a scarily clear diary. The silver lining has been the chance to create this cabin. Using a scale cardboard model, I designed then built every element of the cabin, with the help of 2 friends. We did everything from casting the foundations (mixing then hauling wheelbarrows of wet cement down the hill) to putting together the frame, roofing, cladding, insulating, and laying floorboards. I’ve put on a lot of muscle! We finished by planting a native hedgerow to connect the forest behind us to our land, and create a corridor for wee creatures. I’m hoping for hedgehogs.” Owner, Lotte

My Kip favourites

She loves
“When golden hour hits, I take one of the outdoor wooden stools and a pair of binoculars up the slope next to the cabin, and look out as the light spreads across the hills. Sometimes I see the local family of deer leaping across the field back to the forest. A winter favourite is to get up early, make a coffee and sit at the picture window to observe the drifting mist in the valley. Because of the unique lay of the land, it tends to pool and gather almost like water, before slowly receding as the sun rises.”

We love
“The total silence and Scandi-chic aesthetic.”

The path here through the fields can get muddy; bring good footwear. The loo is a composting one (no flush), though a fancy version!

  • "Where to start, what an absolute privilege to be the first guests here. It has been an absolute dream. You have thought of everything and have built the most special, romantic, and blissful place. We don’t want to leave! We’ve spent mornings watching the sunrise and colours change on the mountains through this stunning window, and evenings reading, drawing, and playing games by the fire while listening to Frank Sinatra records. We’ve been swimming in Gladhouse reservoir and said hi to the neighbouring cows! We can’t wait to come back, already planning our next visit."

  • "Could not dream of a better place to spend our little city break! From the sun rising and setting it’s light on the hills, reading by the fire, listening to Ella Fitzgerald, and enjoying the beautiful surroundings, it couldn’t be any cosier and lovely. I hope that it is the highest compliment that on multiple occasions we looked around the cabin and said ‘we should get ourselves one of these!’ We really look forward to coming back and enjoying the hills, swimming, and walks next time around! Well done Lotte, this place is a dream! ps, Works great as a space for a wee one! Baby Grey loved it!"

  • "We had the most wonderful time here at the cabin, we don’t want to leave! From slow mornings reading and journaling with coffee as it got slowly brighter outside, to exploring the surrounding area in search of Peggy’s pool, and evenings listening to records and playing board games – it’s been perfect. We can’t wait to come back!"
