Space & setting.

We’re worshipping at the altar of this gorgeous conversion — quite literally! Lovingly repurposed into a coffee table, the altar is just one of many original features used to make this church conversion sing with character. Built in ecclesiastical style as a school and chapel for local children in 1866, it is a lesson in how to fuse history and modern living. Close your eyes and imagine the vaulted ceiling reverberating with the angelic voices of the school choir; open them and there’s the ‘pod’, a mezzanine bedroom, seemingly floating in the heavens. Cleverly designed with a glazed screen for privacy, it also provides an on-high view into the church interior, with its stained-glass windows and curation of mid-century and modern furniture. On the ground floor, there’s a second bedroom, with freestanding bathtub and, in another of those charming salvages, a headboard refashioned from the pulpit.

Come with friends – the open-plan kitchen has a spacious central island for drinks and shared supper prep – and don’t forget your four-legged friends too, for long rambling dog walks over the Cotswolds Way. The location is on the money too: in a peaceful village but on the cusp of those caramel-stone villages the Cotswolds is famed for. Once you’ve explored Chipping Campden, Broadway and Stow-on-the-Wold, take a pew on your sun-warmed patio for an afternoon spritz, or take a short walk to the award-winning Ebrington Arms for an early evening drink and supper. Simply divine.

Getting here: drive, or train to Moreton-in-Marsh where transport can be arranged to the chapel.

“Tired, neglected and unused: when the parish council put the local church up for purchase, as residents, we jumped at the chance to breathe new life into the building. After 2 years of careful planning and a year of conservation, renovation and innovation, we’re finally there with our totally unique holiday home.” Owners, Geoff & Julie

  • "We had a really relaxing stay at The Old Chapel. It was the perfect location for long walks with our dog and then cosy nights by the fire. The accommodation had everything we needed and more! Would highly recommend and hope to be able to return one day soon."

  • "The definition of perfection is improving something until it is faultless. With the The Old Chapel, I disagree - it is coming the next day to replenish milk for breakfast when Waitrose left it out of our delivery! Julie & Geoff - the attention to detail speaks for itself. I have already taken down details of the wood burning stove to replicate at home. I so need to know where you bought the adorable dog key hooks in the entrance. As you know we came with a new puppy and she felt most welcome. Anyone with a dog should embrace the love that is held within these walls. But the most special is the stained glass memorial window. Read it and you realise you are in such a special place. With Love CD."

  • "It has been a privilege staying at the wonderful unique church, that has clearly been so lovingly and sympathetically restored. It certainly has the wow factor, with an eclectic mix of old and modern, some of which have been preserved and utilised in an imaginative way. Location was great for us, particularly as we have a dog, lots of lovely walks on the doorstep and an excellent pub in walking distance. Just what we needed."

    G & G, August 2022
  • "A meticulously converted village church in Paxford, that design lovers will feel right at home in."

Sustainability.

Walls are plastered with insulating lime plaster, which contains 50% cork. Bespoke secondary glazing eliminates drafts and reduces heat loss. Roof insulation installed by creating false ceilings that retain the appearance of the originals. All modern cement-based materials removed and replaced with traditional lime which allows the building to breathe. Underfloor heating provides the most efficient way to heating the space, supplemented by a modern efficient log burner. Electricity is provided by Ecotricity, Britain’s greenest energy supplier.
