Space & setting.

These 19thC barns feel like a very special secret, tucked in a valley at the foot of dramatic Dartmoor. Converted by their architect owners, who live in the main farmhouse, each has a modern rustic feel. The small barn sleeps 2: cosy and comfortable with a wood-panelled bedroom; the big barn sleeps 6 in an upside-down configuration, its living room up under the high-pitched, white-clad eaves. Both have gorgeous with a capital G interiors — a blend of contemporary and vintage — and their tile game is first class. Outside, private garden with firepits, one each (plus a wood-fired hot tub for the small barn).

Whether you book the barns together or separately, you’ll revel in their style, and in the absolute peace of the area. There’s a sleepy village with a pub a wander away, and it’s a quick drive onto the open moor for hiking and wild swimming. Further afield, the foodie town of Ashburton awaits, along with bohemian Totnes and the idyllic south coast, all golden beaches and calm estuaries.

Getting here: best to drive

“Phil and I bought the farm 8 years ago. It was in a very tired state, but as architects we were excited by the prospects of a project! We wanted to bring the farmstead back to life and restore and convert the buildings as sympathetically as possible, whilst creating a sustainable energy efficient home. Many years of building work followed, some by us, some by others, during which time our family increased by 2 small boys, cats, pigs and chickens, and now we are happy to be able to share this secret valley with guests in the barns.” Owner Francesca

My Kip favourites

She loves
“Eating breakfast in the sunny gardens, and taking a late afternoon walk up to the ancient oak woodlands of Hembury Woods.”

We love
The quirky and bespoke details: suspended bedside tables and characterful oar in the big barn; a shell-shaped lampshade and the snug bed in the small barn, and the wood panelling and timber shutters of both.

You may not love
A 3-night minimum stay (and 7 nights in the big barn over summer). The barns and owners’ farmhouse all share the same courtyard. Phone reception is patchy but there’s WiFi. Sorry, no dogs in the small barn.

Sustainability.

The barns were converted using natural, recycled and reclaimed materials and are triple glazed. The farm runs on a biomass boiler. Full recycling and composting.

Surrounds.

  • Walk across Dartmoor’s rugged landscapes, past granite tors and wild ponies, or through pretty Hembury Woods (home to rare butterflies over the summer months).
  • Watch the sun set over the moor from Bench Tor.
  • There are wild-swimming spots all along the River Dart, including the crystal-clear Sharrah Pools.
  • Go for brunch at Rafikis Café in nearby Ashburton, then explore the town’s antiques shops; the owners’ dogs sit in the windows.
  • Bohemian Totnes, a former Saxon settlement, has more listed buildings than any other town in Britain.
  • Dine at Riverford Field Kitchen – amazing locally sourced food and an awesome pudding selection.
  • Day trip to the beach (45 mins). We love Mothecombe Beach, part of the historic Flete Estate. Swim, sunbathe, rockpool, paddleboard, surf and explore the coast path. The schoolhouse cafe serves up excellent curried monkfish sandwiches and giant slabs of ginger cake for lunch.
