Right on the coast of Cardigan Bay, these cottages were once the stables on the sprawling Llanfendigaid Estate, ideal for both outdoor adventure and indoor relaxation. Grade-II listed, and sleeping either 2 or 4 apiece, they offer just the right amount of cottagecore; from their gingham fabrics and inglenook fireplaces to the rose arches that hang above their traditional doors. Come as a couple or with friends (plus dogs!) and explore 23 miles of rugged coastline and empty beaches, or hike up Eryri (formerly Snowdonia) National Park’s 15 peaks and around its stunning lakes, rivers and icy waterfalls.

Family holidays are joyous here too, thanks to a shared indoor pool, tyre swings, picnic spots and acres of woodland to run wild. There are caves for hide and seek down on Tonfanau Beach, and rock pools for little ones, before you settle in for evening board games with a hot chocolate. Or wrap up warm and head back outside; you’re in the middle of a Dark Sky Reserve and the stargazing here is epic.

Getting here: drive, or train to Tywyn then taxi (10 mins)

Owners Lisa and Gareth

Gareth’s dad was from Tywyn and his nan lived here until she was 105, so he spent every summer holiday in the area. Now living in Cheshire, and with his dad no longer with us, Gareth wanted a reason to keep coming back to this place he loves. When Llanfendigaid came on the market, he jumped at the opportunity to buy it. The vision is to shape it in a way that’s sympathetic to its history while updating it so the infrastructure remains strong for years to come. A keen environmentalist who loves the outdoors and great interiors, Gareth is passionate about preserving and enhancing this special place.

  • "The cottage we stayed in, truly was a hidden gem. Scenic location surrounded by fields and hills (in the distance you can see the sea). The cottage itself is equipped to the highest standard and the use of the pool is a fantastic bonus. Emma welcomed us on arrival - such a wonderful person. It’s a good base to travel out to the local waterfalls and beaches. We are definitely booking again for next year. Thank you Lisa and Garath."

  • "We had a fabulous half term in Wales at the Cottage - it was everything we had hoped and more. Beautifully situated near the coast with everything we could need for a self catered holiday. The facilities in the cottage were recently refurbished and really lovely - including a washing machine which was much appreciated. The swimming pool was a real bonus for the children and just the right temperature. There is so much to do in the area and the beach easily in walking distance. Lisa was always on hand to help with anything we needed and knowledgeable about the area. We have already booked to return next year!"

  • The estate is right on the coast in Cardigan Bay, a long sweeping arc which joins the Llyn peninsula in the north with Pembrokeshire in the south, and is fringed by amazing empty beaches.
  • Walk the Wales Coastal Path in either direction keeping an eye out for wild dolphins and seals, then loop back over the hills to return to the estate.
  • Or simply stroll down to Tonfanau Beach and explore the caves (20 mins from the door); can you find the one with a tunnel back to the estate?
  • On fair-weather days, swim in the estate’s indoor pool or head into Tywyn, which has a traditional independent cinema serving great nachos and popcorn topped with sweets!
  • Take the steam train to Harlech Castle, a World Heritage Site entered via a ‘floating’ footbridge. On the way back get off at Barmouth for an hour to wander around the seaside town’s quirky shops and eat mussels overlooking the sea.
  • We love Aberdovey’s white-sand beach and the Aberdyfi Ice Cream Company serves the best ice cream ever. Get the kids crab fishing from the jetty, take a boat trip from the harbour or go kayaking out into Cardigan Bay.
  • You’re staying within Eryri National Park (formerly Snowdonia) with its 9 mountain ranges, 15 peaks over 3,000 feet and 23 miles of sweeping coastline.
  • Swim at Tal-y-llyn, a stunning ribbon lake circled by a walking trail, with plenty of entry spots for dipping. Afterwards, go for lunch at the Ty’n Y Cornel Hotel (20 mins’ drive).
  • Dogs will love the Dolgoch Falls walk, a chain of 3 waterfalls cascading down through mystical woodland with lots of dog-friendly swimming spots along the way.
